Bucking the trend with academic appointments10 September 2009
BU is bucking the trend in the Higher Education sector with the announcement of 37 academic appointments available across the University. The new roles come at a time when a number of universities are making significant cut backs. The University is appointing 37 academics including five Professors, one Associate Professor, six Senior Lecturers and 25 Lecturers across its six Academic Schools – The Business School, The School of Conservation Sciences, The School of Design, Engineering & Computing, The School of Health & Social Care, The Media School and The School of Services Management. The funding for these posts is, in part, a consequence of the University’s strong performance in last year’s Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). The appointments underline BU’s continuous investment in its academic excellence. In the past three years, the University has recruited 17 Professors, six Associate Professors, three Readers, 53 Senior Lecturers and 62 Lecturers and has changed the academic career structure across Schools. It also continues to offer one of the largest development programmes for academic staff in Higher Education: the Releasing Research and Enterprise Potential (RREP) programme. Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Curran said: “We are looking forward to welcoming a new wave of talented academics to join us. “These academics will play an important role in continuing to develop BU’s reputation as a centre for academic excellence, enhancing the experience our students can expect from their time at BU.” Commenting on the appointments within the Media School, Stephen Jukes, Dean said: “Our aim in The Media School is to combine the very highest academic standards with up-to-the-minute professional practice, reflecting the far reaching changes sweeping through the creative media industries. We now want to build on this winning formula by adding to our team of outstanding staff." Dr Gail Thomas, Dean of the School of Health & Social Care added: “We are delighted to be advertising eight new posts in the School as part of this exciting and extensive recruitment campaign. We look forward to receiving applications from academics who are keen to be involved in the development of the School, and University, at a time of positive change and growth.” In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) BU was the 4th most improved university in the UK for the quality of its research (according to the Times Higher Education). Eight BU subject areas contained research of a quality that was comparable with the very best in the world: Art & Design (including Computer Animation); Archaeology; Business Management (including Tourism); Communication, Culture & Media; Computer Sciences; General Engineering; Geography & Environmental Sciences and Nursing & Midwifery.
