BU makes films with the Student Loans Company

6 July 2012

Bournemouth University has teamed up with the Student Loans Company (SLC) to produce animation films explaining new fees system.

After the success of BU’s ‘Facts About Fees’ film last year, we have made two films with the SLC which explain the finance system to current and prospective part–time students. They outline what funding is available, eligibility for finance and how and when to apply. Part–time students starting university can apply to the SLC for a tuition fee loan for the first time this year.

John Vinney, Vice Chancellor of BU, said: “Last summer there was a lot of confusion around the new Higher Education finance system for UK students. We felt a responsibility to help students understand the key facts so they could make an informed decision, and accomplished this by presenting the facts in an unbiased, accessible and fun way. Our ‘Fact about Fees’ animation achieved just that, and after its success we were delighted to be asked by Student Finance England to work with them on a series of further films – the first two short films focus on informing part time students about the key facts relevant to them.”

Andy Shenton, Student Loans Company’s Finance Consultant for the Bournemouth area, said: “We were really impressed with Bournemouth University’s ‘Facts about Fees’ video, which they produced last year to explain the changes to student funding in 2012/13/ The Bournemouth team worked closely with us to produce an informative animation on part–time funding which helps students understand the application process.”

The Student Loans Company, which also processes and administers funding for over one million full–time students in England every year, has been working closely with key partners across the part–time sector this year to ensure their expertise helps to shape the part–time application process.

Part–time students will be able to apply for their funding from early August 2012.
