BU supports health care education in Nepal

2 September 2009

Professor Edwin van Teijlingen A grant from the British Council will enable higher education institutions in Nepal to benefit from BU’s health care expertise.

Academics from BU’s School of Health & Social Care have been given £55,000 from the British Council to address gaps in teaching, learning and research in Nepal, one of the poorest counties in the world.

Working in partnership with the University of Aberdeen, Tribhuvan University in Nepal and The Development Resource Centre, a charity based in Kathmandu, the British Council grant will be used over three years to enable higher education institutions in Nepal to access and utilise research-based information in the medical, nursing and public health fields.

Professor Edwin van Teijlingen, from the Centre for Midwifery, Maternal & Perinatal Health Research at BU and a Visiting Professor at Manhohan Memorial Institute of Health Sciences, Purbanchal University, Kathmandu, said: “Bournemouth University is keen to increase its research involvement and share its expertise with those in developing countries.

“Both the University of Aberdeen and BU have worked with academics in Nepal in the past and this project will help us to further support and encourage high calibre research and teaching in the country.”

Dr Padam Simkhada from the University of Aberdeen added: “This joint project will also contribute to sustainable development in higher education in Nepal.”

The grant has been given as part of the British Council’s Development Partnerships in Higher Education programme which has awarded nine grants to projects in Asia. This is the only funded project in Nepal.

Further information about the project is available on the British Council’s website listed below.
