Government has tripled BU's research grant following its outstanding performance in the Research Assessment Exercise.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) has announced that BU's research grant for 2009/10 will be over £2.2M, tripling last year's award.

This large increase in funding follows the announcement that Bournemouth is the fourth most improved university in the UK for the quality of its research. This compares with an average increase for English universities of 7.8%, and means that BU ranks in the top 10 biggest winners in England for percentage increase in HEFCE research funding (2008/09 to 2009/10).

The University's improvement in research performance was recognised in the national Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) in December 2008. According to the Research Fortnight quality index, compiled using the results of the RAE, BU is now in the top ten for research amongst the UK's new universities - those institutions which have become universities since 1992.

"We're delighted that BU's internationally renowned research is receiving the funding it deserves," said Professor Nick Petford, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Enterprise).

"The increased funding levels will enable us to grow our research and enterprise activities in new and exciting ways. BU staff can be rightly proud of this critical external endorsement of their research efforts," Professor Petford continued.
