Paralympic gold medal-winning cyclist Darren Kenny has received an honorary doctorate from BU during an Award Ceremony at the Bournemouth International Centre (BIC).
Thirty-nine-year-old Darren, who lives in Verwood, became an Honorary Doctor of Arts. The award recognises his achievements in cycling and for setting an inspirational example of determination and perseverance against the odds.
Accidents and injuries seemed to have ended Darren’s career at the age of 18, but he returned to competitive cycling some years later and swiftly rose to the heights of international success.
At the 2008 Paralympic Games in Beijing he won four gold medals and one silver, following two gold medals and one silver at Athens in 2004. He has been World Cup champion six times and holds numerous speed records. Earlier this year, he was awarded an OBE for his outstanding achievements.
Darren’s wife, mother and son were in attendance as he collected the award from BU Orator Alan Hunt, who described the athlete as “a true ambassador for his sport”.
Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Darren said: “When I heard I'd been nominated for an honorary doctorate, it was unexpected but also a very pleasant surprise. I left school early so it's a pleasure to be receiving the award. My family and friends are really chuffed!
“I have enjoyed working with BU media students and contributing to diversity and awareness activities in the past, and I'm looking forward to expanding my links with BU in the near future.”
Head of sportBU Mark Jenkins, who nominated Darren for the award, said: “Darren is an inspirational figure to all, proving that even in the face of adversity it is possible to continue with an activity that you love and also attain the pinnacle of achievement.”
Also receiving an honorary degree alongside Darren was founder and Chief Executive of Marben Engineering Co Ltd Bernard Roberts, who became a Doctor of Engineering. As a leading specialist in boiler engineering, Bernard’s expertise is much in demand and he has played key technical roles in many high-profile power supply projects, many in developing countries.
