BU awarded employment quality mark20 March 2009
BU has achieved the disability 'Two Ticks' quality mark in recognition of our positive commitment regarding the employment, retention, training and career development of disabled employees. The mark was awarded by the Department of Work and Pensions, which commended BU for its commitment to interviewing all disabled applicants meeting the criteria for a job vacancy and considering them on their abilities. BU was also praised for reviewing the development needs of its employees with disabilities at least once a year, and making every effort to ensure employees can stay in employment if they become disabled. James Palfreman-Kay, BU’s Equality and Diversity Adviser said: “Achievement of this status is one way in which BU demonstrates its commitment to diversity and equality by ensuring we are open and accessible to all, and value our staff and students for what they bring as individuals.” The ‘Two Ticks’ disability symbol is displayed on the HR and Dignity, Diversity and Equality webpages as well as on all job adverts, application forms and recruitment literature. The symbol and associated responsibilities apply to all University vacancies. BU is currently in the process of reviewing 2008 best-practice guidelines including the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines and the PAS 78 (British Standards Institute guidance on website accessibility). The University is drawing up an action plan to ensure it meets the accessibility criteria outlined in these guidelines. Related Links:
