Screenwriting talent takes the stage

15 January 2009

Media students in BU HD TV Studio Showcase event in London to highlight the screenwriting talent of recent BU graduates.

One of the UK’s best-loved writers for television will be among the leading names supporting this year’s showcase of BU screenwriting talent in London.

Alan Plater CBE will join graduates and staff for this year’s BU Media School Screenwriting Showcase on Monday 19 January at The Courtyard theatre in London.

The event will showcase the work of recent BU graduates from the MA Screenwriting and the BA Scriptwriting for Film & TV.

Plater will present the screenwriting award that bears his name to the two students who obtained the highest marks for their final screenwriting project: Sheila West from the BA and Chris O'Malley from the MA.

The evening will feature short performances from these and other students' work, led by director Darren Bransford and a team of professional actors. Stephen Jukes, Dean of the Media School, will officiate at the event and other BU screenwriting staff will be in attendance.

Plater, a Visiting Professor at BU, is one of Britain's most prolific, original and entertaining writers. Plater is famous for writing the popular TV series Z Cars among a wealth of television and radio programmes as well as theatre and the cinema. He was awarded a CBE in 2005 in recognition of his services to drama.

BU’s Media School is firmly established as a major training and education centre for the media industries. The School hosts the only Centre for Excellence in Media Practice in the UK (as designated by Higher Education Funding Council for England) and one of only two accredited Skillset Screen & Media Academies in the country.

The BA Scriptwriting for Film & Television and MA Screenwriting courses at Bournemouth both receive accreditation from Skillset, the audio-visual industry’s training body.

The BU Media School Screenwriting Showcase is scheduled for Monday 19 January at the Courtyard Thetre, London. Doors to the theatre open at 6pm , and the performance will start at 7.30pm.
