Golfers swing for BUSA titles9 January 2008
After eight head-to-head matches, our first team golfers hold a commanding lead in the BUSA (British Universities Sports Association) Premier South table. The record, to date, features decisive wins for BU over first teams from Cardiff, Plymouth and Buckinghamshire Chilterns University College to their credit. Points from two final matches - away to Bath and Exeter - should clinch the division and send BU into the BUSA national team championship knock-out tournament. Not to be outdone, the BU men’s second team has clinched the BUSA Western Conference 1A title. The squad won eight and drew one of its nine pre-Christmas matches with victories over Exeter’s second team and first teams from Aberystwyth, Swansea and the University of Wales Institute Cardiff. As a result, the second team has clinched its place in the post-season promotion play-offs and a berth in the BUSA knock-out trophy. BU’s third team is currently fourth place in the Western Conference 1A table. Individually, BU golfers have made a good start in the first of this year’s BUSA Strokeplay Qualifiers, leaving themselves with a chance to play in the 2008 BUSA Strokeplay Finals. The first of four qualifying events, held at the Princes Golf Course in Sandwich, Kent, saw BU golfers Daryl Wood and Kevin Garwood both score 152 over two days of play to finish in joint eight place. Bournemouth’s Andy Shakespear scored 156 and finished joint 18th overall. The BUSA Strokeplay Qualifiers continue in March with events in the Midlands and West.
