BU appoints top tourism expert24 October 2007
Professor Dimitrios Buhalis has taken up the prestigious position of Established Chair in Tourism, within our top-rated Centre of Excellence for Tourism. He has also become the Deputy Director in the International Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Research. An internationally renowned academic and researcher, who regularly advises the World Tourism Organisation and the European Commission, Professor Buhalis brings his expertise in eTourism to the region. He has years of experience consulting with hospitality organisations worldwide on the impact of Information Technology to support management and marketing. Professor Buhalis said: “Given the growth of online travel sales and social networking web applications such as TripAdvisor, technology is empowering consumer choice and becomes critical for the competitiveness of tourism organisations and regions”. His global experience and current research focuses on helping smaller hospitality organisations apply ICT strategies to support their business plan. Professor Buhalis is collaborating with Greece, Spain, Cyprus, Portugal and Italy on an EU-funded project i-SeT, which has been awarded £1.5m to develop wireless-based internet services for small and medium-sized hotels in Europe. He has published 12 books, including ‘eTourism: Strategic Information Technology for Tourism Management’ (Pearson: 2003). Related Links:
