Sports Teams Give Knock-out Punch

BU Footballers BU’s student sporting teams are going for gold as the British Universities Sports Association (BUSA) season hits championship level.

The men’s teams in football, golf and volleyball are all chasing silverware in BUSA knockout competitions following highly successful league campaigns.

Football

The men’s football team has reached the semi-final of the BUSA Football Men’s Knockout Plate following a 3-1 victory over the University of Bath.

The team, which is undefeated this season, now heads for Cardiff to face the University of Wales Institute on 21 March for a place in the final.

The winner of that match will host either Sunderland or Loughborough for the Knockout Plate.

Golf

BU Golfers The men’s first and second golf teams overcame difficult opposition in the first rounds of their respective knockouts to progress.

The first team took a step closer to the BUSA National Championship with a play-off victory over Loughborough.

The teams were all square at 3-3 but BU won at the first extra hole to take the tie.

Bournemouth now travels to regional rivals Exeter in the quarter-finals on 21 March.

The second team had a slightly easier time against Kent in the Knockout Trophy, taking the match 4.5 – 1.5 and will join the first team on the trip to Exeter to face their seconds on 21 March.

The men’s third team begin their post-season campaign in the final eight of the Knockout Shield with a tie at home against University College Northampton, also on 21 March.

Volleyball

After their first round victory over Cambridge in the BUSA Men’s National Volleyball Championship, the Bournemouth squad heads for Loughborough and a quarter-final match against the University of London.

Two further days of competition will decide the national champion.

All of the results from team and individual competitions go towards BU’s overall BUSA Championship which last year saw Bournemouth climb to its highest ranking ever at 36th out of 146 institutions competing.
