Scroll down the page or pick a month for more information: January | February | March | April | May | June | July | August | September | October | November | December JanuaryBU students founded a charity project to introduce computers to African school children > Students Taking IT to African Kids Former international journalist and Dean of the Media School, Stephen Jukes, was appointed to a national panel that assessed the BBC's impartiality to coverage of business news. > BU Media Head to Review BBC Business Coverage FebruaryProfessor Sean Street and his colleagues in the Media School were awarded £750,000 from the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) to create a digital commercial radio archive. > Major Funding Preserves News Radio Archive We achieved a 10% increase in applications to undergraduate courses based on figures from the Universities and Colleges Admission Service (UCAS). Total applications to BU topped 16,280, an increase of 1,600. > BU Application Figures Reach New Heights Former BU student Phil Robinson, who graduated in 2001, became a key figure in a UK Patent Office campaign entrepreneurial think tank to advise others on intellectual property and enterprise. > Graduate Success Features in New ‘Think Kit’ MarchOur award-winning student nightclub, The Old Fire Station, played host to McFly and stars from Radio 1’s 'The Chris Moyles Show' for a charity event, raising money for Comic Relief. > BU Revs Up for Red Nose Rallyoke BU’s football team won its first silverware in the British Universities Sports Association competition. > BU Grabs Plate After Extra Time Win AprilBBC journalist Nik Gowing gave a lecture on new pressures that challenge credibility of the media during time of crisis. > Reporting for Duty: The Role of New Media in Times of Crisis - 3 May 2007 International Hospitality Management student Sam Johnson, who undertook his course placement at Buckingham Palace, won first place in a national catering competition recognising top students in hospitality. MayWe welcomed a royal guest, Prince Edward, The Earl of Wessex to our Talbot Campus. He visited the refurbished Media School and multi-million-pound Library and met university staff and students. The Guardian University Guide named us as the top place in the UK to study Tourism. BU graduate Louise Palmer won a prestigious honour for her undergraduate project at the world renowned Royal Television Society Awards. > BU Graduate Wins Royal Television Society Award Staff, students and members of the Dorset community enjoyed 'An Evening With…Minette Walters', – the international best-selling crime novelist and one of BU’s Honorary Doctorates. > A Nudge for the Perfect Murder JuneVice-Chancellor Professor Paul Curran was awarded the prestigious Royal Geographical Society Patron’s Medal for his international contribution to Earth observation. > BU Vice-Chancellor Awarded Royal Geographical Society Patron’s Medal The Centre of Postgraduate Medical Research & Education, based in the School of Health & Social Care was launched and became the postgraduate medical centre in Dorset. > BU Launches Medical Research Centre Researcher Patricia Holland from The Media School was awarded a £92,000 research grant by the Arts & Humanities Research Council (AHRC) to investigate the media’s view of the Thatcher years. > Research to Reflect the Media’s View of Thatcher Years We hosted The Festival of Design & Innovation to showcase students’ work. JulyOur forensic students benefited from our world-class Professors and Senior Lecturers and participated in one of the UK’s largest Forensic Summer Schools, including workshops at our very own crime house, Rose Cottage. > Forensic Simulation Workshops Professor Sean Street from the Media School scooped gold in the New York Radio Awards. Journalists from Indian television came to meet and study with academics and students for a three-month training programme on newsgathering and production. > Indian Correspondents on Course at BU We signed a three-year commitment to continue our collaborations and student exchange scheme with Memorial University, Newfoundland, Canada. AugustMore success and recognition for our commitment to improving. We received our highest ever placing in The Times Good University Guide 2008. > BU’s excellence recognised in league table Solomon Akpohiere Okukeren III, the tribal king of the Arhavwarien region of Nigeria visited our School of Design, Engineering & Computing Computer-animated shorts by two 2006 BU graduates were featured at SIGGRAPH (Special Interest Group for Computer Graphics) 2007, one of the world’s leading Computer Animation Festivals. SeptemberA world-first rock music performance, inspired by research into the geology and the coastline of the Antarctic, debuted at the Geological Society’s Bicentenary Conference in London. > ‘Rock’ music inspired by Antarctic research The Business School invested in key people to help it build for the future. > The Business School is changing John Denham, the UK’s Secretary of State for Innovation, Universities and Skills, visited, and praised the Bournemouth Screen Academy. > Secretary of State praises Bournemouth Screen Academy We welcomed Professor Dimitrios Buhalis, a world expert in the study and development of global Tourism and Hospitality, to the University. > BU appoints top tourism expert OctoberRebecca Martin, studying LLB Law, won Young Volunteer of the Year for her commitment and enthusiasm, an accolade presented by the Citizens Advice Bureau. > BU Law student wins Young Volunteer of the Year Award The UK’s first Sony High Definition media studio went live in our Media School, enabling students to work with the very latest in broadcast technology. > Sony delivers first HD studio to BU Our world-leading and award-winning National Centre for Computer Animation (NCCA) and the Beijing Advanced Technology College (ATC) signed a contract funded by the Chinese Government, to animate the Beijing Opera. > Bournemouth’s bid to animate the Beijing National Opera The NCCA was also recognised as number one in the UK for best place to study computer animation in the UK. > BU is best in the UK for Computer Animation NovemberLocal resident and well-loved actor Martin Clunes received an Honorary Doctorate at our annual Graduation Ceremonies, in recognition of his commitment and constant support to Dorset charities. > Doc Martin becomes Doctor Martin Clunes The School of Services Management was honoured for outstanding ‘Contribution to International Education’ at the Bournemouth Daily Echo Tourism Awards. > Awards recognise BU's contribution to tourism BU’s School of Health & Social Care and The School of Health & Social Care at Oxford Brookes University collaborated on a tender for a £96,000 contract to provide Continuing Professional Development for the NHS South Central Strategic Health Authority. > Award of tender for the provision of Continuing Professional Development Our Pro-Vice Chancellor and expert in Volcanic Activity, Professor Nick Petford, provided his expertise to help support the regeneration of the volcanic island of Montserrat. > Volcano expert boosts fortunes of Caribbean island Another nomination…we are among the finalists for Computer Weekly’s ‘Best to Work in IT Awards’ for 2008.
