Silver for BU Radio student

A Bournemouth University radio student has scooped silver at a prestigious award ceremony in London.

MA Radio Production (MARP) graduate Lee McIntyre scooped silver at the annual Student Radio Awards (SRA) in London last week.

Lee, known on air and to his friends as Mog, received the award in the Newcomer category for his work on BIRSt (Bournemouth Internet Radio Station).

He said: "I'm bit overwhelmed at the moment, but completely chuffed. It was quite nerve-wracking seeing your name go up and I must admit when they read my name out it didn't sink in to begin with. But after a year of tremendous fun on the course and a real hard effort, especially with the work on the breakfast show with Phill, it was a great end to capture all of this.

Phill Jupitus, of 'Never Mind the Buzzcocks' and BBC Radio 6 fame, launched BIRSt's 10th anniversary year back in January with a series of breakfast shows produced by Mog.

Mog started the course in September 2009 after receiving a Citizen Scholarship in recognition of his voluntary work prior to his time at BU. He used the funding to invest in radio equipment and attend industry training events, all of which no doubt helped him achieve his SRA success.

MARP course leader, Professor Sean Street, said: "This is a great tribute to Mog, who has been an outstanding student throughout his time with us. It also caps a great anniversary year for MARP; I'm extremely proud of the whole group. This is the 6th consecutive year that BIRSt has been honoured at the SRAs. The course has picked up awards at 9 out of the past 11 ceremonies, since MARP started. It is a celebration of radio at BU."

The MARP students were awarded their MAs at BU's graduation ceremony at the Bournemouth International Centre earlier this month.

But what does the future hold for Mog? He said: "In the short term I'd like to take up the offers of visiting broadcasters and possible placements, in the hope of working within one of them. Long term, I would love to work in making radio comedy, or talk radio."
