15 March 2010

As the infamous ‘doof-doofs’ signal the end of each episode of ‘Eastenders’ this week, keep a close eye on the closing credits and stay alert for the name of a BU graduate.

Four episodes of the popular soap were directed by Alex Kalymnios, who graduated from BU with a BA (Hons) in TV and Video Production in 2002. Alex’s episodes will be screened this week in the UK on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday, 15, 16 and 18 March, and Monday, 22 March.

The 30-year-old from London has also directed episodes of Channel 4’s 'Hollyoaks' and ‘Hollyoaks Later’. She is currently working on teen soap, ‘The Cut’, for BBC Switch which can be viewed online and on BBC Two in the UK.

Last year, she was recognised amongst the UK’s up-and-coming talent in the broadcasting sector after being named one of Broadcast Magazine’s ‘Hotshots of 2009’.

"Her eye is exceptional, as is her ability to communicate... in more than 20 years of making television drama, Alex is the best young female director I've come across," said Tony Wood, creative director of Lime Pictures, the production company behind ‘Hollyoaks’.

'Eastenders' is screened on BBC One at 8.00pm (Monday) and 7.30 pm (Tuesday and Thursday). Episodes can also be viewed via the BBC iPlayer in the UK for up to seven days after the original broadcast date.
