Pavilion Dance, Bournemouth (UK).

Interactive technology has rapidly become part of our daily life – from watching TV online to using GPS navigation on one’s mobile phone, and it is no different in the arena of dance.

Digital Futures in Dance is a brand new conference giving artists, promoters, producers, venues, academics, creative and digital companies the opportunity to come together to discuss future possibilities for dance and technology. With an increasing growth in interdisciplinary practice, Digital Futures in Dance investigates how new digital technologies create new conditions for choreographing, presenting and experiencing dance.

Digital Futures in Dance brings together some of the leading thinkers and creators in dance and media technology. They include BAFTA award-winning media producer Anthony Lilley (CEO of Magic Lantern), award-winning German dance company Silke Z./resistdance, “Contemporary Dance’s renaissance man” (New York Times) Jonah Bokaer (US), groundbreaking artists’ collective BADco (official selection 54th Venice Biennale 2011), the inventor of influential choreographic software ISADORA Mark Coniglio, founder of dance-tech.net and dance-tech.tv Marlon Barrios Solanes (Venezuela, New York, Geneva) as well as major UK talent Matthias Sperling (Siobhan Davies Dance, Wayne McGregor / Random Dance) and master of 3D installations Billy Cowie.

The conference programme offers examples of gaming technologies, infra-red motion capture, animation, immersive environments, interactive scenographies, online and screen based platforms, social networking technologies and thought-driven reality simulation. Through presentations, interactive workshops, performances and installations, the conference will explore the fluidity between forms and new digital technologies and how the mixing of the latest software can transform the way how audiences and artists will experience dance in the future.

Eckhard Thiemann, conference programme director, says:

“Through the combined expertise and partnership of three leading dance organisations (Dance South West, South East Dance and DanceDigital) and Bournemouth University we have been able to bring together a fantastically rich and inspiring conference programme. This is an opportunity to listen to the latest developments, watch performances and installations, learn new skills in practical workshops and to network. We structured the conference around three broad themes: The Expanded Stage, Body & Data, and Social Interaction, capturing the different dimensions where dance and technology meet for audiences and artists.”

Digital Futures in Dance hosts over 20 international speakers and artists from Israel, Croatia, US, Germany, the UK and (via Skype) India. It includes six live performances and a range of installations and media works.
