BU scriptwriting student wins award in BBC Writersroom competition. |
Second year BA (Hons) Scriptwriting for Film and Television student Sophie Petzal has impressed judges at a BBC Writersroom scriptwriting competition in London.
Entrants for ‘All Mixed Up’ were asked for ten pages of a pilot for a sitcom.
Sophie describes her piece, ‘The God Committee’ as “about a teenage girl who discovers she's pregnant, realising that the father could be any one of four men”.
At a showcase at the Soho Theatre in London on Saturday Sophie was awarded £250 and the chance to develop the series with Triforce Promotions, under the mentorship of the BBC. She’s also been offered an optioning contract, meaning the BBC have singled out ‘The God Committee’ and want to own the development rights.
“I now have to develop another two episodes,” she explained, “to create a much longer showcase to be staged in the main studio at the Soho Theatre next year in front of industry names such as Kudos, Talkback Thames and Channel 4.”
Sophie is the only female writer on the scheme and by far the youngest, making the experience, which she described as ‘mind blowing’, all the more significant.
In the immediate future Sophie hopes ‘The God Committee’ will be fully produced and broadcast and after university she hopes to write for television and explore some of her more dramatic ideas.
Sophie concluded: “Bournemouth University has been so wonderful and my lecturers have been supportive and encouraging throughout. The BBC has done so much for my confidence and ability. It was an incredible experience and I thank everyone for giving me this opportunity.”
