Three students attend Salzburg Academy on Media & Global Change with support from The Media School. |
The Media School at Bournemouth University has continued its close partnership with the Salzburg Academy on Media & Global Change by generously supporting three graduate/research students to attend the Academy for the fifth year running.
The Academy takes place annually at Schloss Leopoldskron - an 18th century rococo palace with rich history (and famous filming location of "The Sound of Music").
BU collaborates closely with the Academy in terms of teaching and also research, for example the Unplugged project, the biggest global media experiment of its kind, which attracted worldwide media attention, was launched in 2010 at the 4th Academy.
The Media School made comprehensive donations to each student, which helped them cover expenses such as fees, accommodation and field trips. They were awarded to Daniel Ash, Diana Krovvidi (both from MA Multi-Media Journalism) and Marketa Zezulkova (a PhD researcher at CEMP).
The students gained superb experience through attending Lectures from Academy faculty and sessions with world-leading journalists, including the Dean of BU’s Media School, Stephen Jukes, who delivered a guest lecture on objectivity and the ethics of conflict reporting.
Stephen said “At the Media School we are really proud of our partnership with the Salzburg Academy. We are one of the founder institutions and it has gone from strength to strength over the past five years.”
Attendees of the Academy experienced sessions on news curation and looked at case studies using Storify; a tool to make stories using social media. They studied how to design lesson modules on media literacy, examined Multimedia Production and went to Screenings, debates and field trips.
All three students were thrilled with the opportunity to attend the Academy. Daniel said: “The experience expanded my horizons academically, socially and practically.”
Diana added that she gained an excellent insight into social media and Marketa found the time in the Academy made her much more media literate. “I valued the possibility to share my life with other individuals from multicultural backgrounds in such an inspiring environment. I would like to truly thank Bournemouth University,” she said.
Dr Paul Mihailidis, Assistant Professor at Emerson College (Boston, USA) and Director of the Salzburg Academy on Media & Global Change, was also very pleased with the contributions made by BU’s students, saying: “Since the Academy’s founding in 2007, Bournemouth University has annually sent some of the strongest students and faculty to Salzburg.”
He also added “We hope their experiences here have provided the perspective they will need to help lead reporting and storytelling in the digital age.”
