Poetry of Professor Seán Street inspires Atrium Gallery exhibition. |
A retrospective exhibition of poetry by Bournemouth University’s Professor of Radio, Seán Street, opens in the Atrium Gallery on 13 July 2011.
Seán is a much loved radio personality and academic who has also penned seven collections of poetry. The most recent is ‘Time Between Tides’ which is the inspiration behind the exhibition.
As Julie Herring, Curator at Bournemouth University says: “Seán and I have been discussing and planning this retrospective exhibition to reflect his collaboration with artists who have influenced and inspired his poetry over recent decades. As a painter gives his work a title, a poet’s words paints many pictures. ‘Time Between Tides’ is a poignant title that allows us to pause and reflect – a time to be still and thoughtful.”
Street’s poetry has a clear sense of place and the prevalent theme of landscapes fuels the imagination of visual artists.
Notable artists with work on display include George Dannatt, Frank Finn, Elisabeth Frink, John Fuller, Michael Gough, Tony Paul and Bernard Miles Pearson, all of whom have painting displayed beside their poetic counterparts at the exhibition.
Perhaps most poignantly Seán’s own daughter Jemma Street, an artist in her own right, will have a number of new paintings on display. (pictured above).
Seán said: “I have been lucky enough to work with a number of wonderful artists and sculptors who have become friends over the past thirty years, and one of the most rewarding aspects of such collaborations is to find that words and images can share inspiration from a common subject. Some of these artists – like Elisabeth Frink, Michael Gough, George Dannatt and John Fuller – are not longer with us, so it's very special for me to remember those associations in particular through an event such as this.”
Seán will give a short reading of selected work at a preview evening on Wednesday 13 July 5.30 – 8pm. The reading will take place at 6.15pm. ‘Time Between Tides’ opens to the public on 14 July – 20 August 2011 in the Atrium Gallery, Bournemouth University Talbot Campus, Poole, BH12 5BB. The exhibition will be open Monday to Saturday 9am – 6pm and admission is free.
