Ethnography and Anthropology in Public Communication

A man tossing rice

This seminar provides an opportunity for postgraduate and postdoctoral researchers in public and marketing communication to discuss the application of ethnography and anthropological perspectives to these emerging areas of media and communication research.

This seminar will be deliberately small and informal to encourage discussion and stimulate ideas for future research collaboration within the group. The event does not propose to be a ‘how to do….’ workshop, nor will it follow a conference format with presentations from participants. Instead, three experienced ethnographers/anthropologists from academia and industry will be invited to share their experiences of researching media, marketing and organisational communication from an ethnographic and/or anthropological perspective. These speakers will also offer valuable insight into preparing successful research bids and collaborating with industry.

Time will be given to break-out sessions to allow for small-group and one-to-one discussion. At the end of the day, an outline for future collaboration will be created by the participants.

It is the intention that this one-day event will form the foundation of future collaborative work amongst participants (publications, research proposals, conferences etc.).

This seminar is being organised by the Centre for Public Communication Research.

Where: Talbot Campus, Bournemouth University BH12 5BB
When: Tuesday 6 July 2010; 10.00am to 4.30pm.
Further information: To participate in the seminar please email Carrie Hodges by Friday, June 25.
