Record year for BU nominees at RTS awards

A record number of BU entries have been short-listed for honours this year by the regional Royal Television Society (RTS)

The work of five graduates from the BA (Hons) in Television Production feature in the list of nominees for student awards. BU's noiminees include 'Hello My Name Is' and 'Vanity Show' in the Entertainment category; 'Reaching Albion' and 'Secret Station' in the Factual category; and 'Automatic Rain' in the Drama category.

"We are delighted that five of our student films have been nominated across the three student categories in this year's Royal Television Society's annual awards," said Sue Sudbury, Senior Lecturer. "These awards are very prestigious and highly respected in the television industry and shows that our students' work continues to be of an exceptionally high calibre."

The student awards aim to encourage and nurture the next generation of the media industry. All regional student winners will compete for national RTS awards.

"We are very proud that our students continue to make a real impression on the RTS awards," said Fiona Cownie, Head of the Media Academic Group in BU's renowned Media School. "The students' work is evidence of their energy and commitment to their studies at Bournemouth University. We wish them the best of luck at the awards ceremony."

Last year, BU graduate Chris Poole continued the BU tradition of producing at least one regional RTS award winner every year since 2003. Chris, who gained a First Class Honours degree from BU in Television Production in 2008, won both regional and national RTS awards for Best Entertainment for his film Give Us A Break.

The creative 23-year-old joins former BU students Natalie Berry (2003) and Louise Palmer (2007) in winning both RTS national and regional honours.

The annual Southern Centre RTS Awards are the "must attend" event of the year for media professionals in the region. Every year the great and the good of the media industry gather to recognise the achievements of their peers and to celebrate the growing abilities and flair of the area's students.

This year's ceremony will be held in the Winchester Guildhall on Friday, 19 February, hosted by Sally Taylor from the BBC in the South and Fred Dineage of ITV Meridian.
