The School of Conservation Science recently hosted a visit by Japanese coastal management experts as part of a learning exchange programme led by Dr Steve Fletcher of Bournemouth University. The Japanese delegation, from Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology, The Japanese Coastal Zone Studies Association, the Global Environmental Information Centre (United Nations University, Tokyo), and the Japanese Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transportation, visited a range of coastal sites and practitioners in Dorset and the Isle of Wight in order to learn from coastal management practice in the UK.

The visit to the UK was the return leg of the exchange programme, which saw representatives of Bournemouth University, Bournemouth Borough Council, Purbeck District Council and Government Office for the South East visit Tokyo Bay in May. The entire project was funded by The Daiwa Anglo-Japanese Foundation.
