Bournemouth University has signed a wide-ranging agreement with China’s Ministry of Science and Technology to help develop the nation's creative media industry.

The agreement was signed at the end of a week long tour by the university’s Media School that also paved the way for a series of projects with top named Chinese academic institutions in the cities of Beijing, Wuhan and Chongqing.

"This is a tremendous opportunity to work with the Media industry in China at a time of breathtaking growth," said Stephen Jukes, Head of the Media School. "We look forward to a long period of co-operation."

The agreement with the Ministry of Science and Technology in Beijing is aimed at strengthening the emerging New Media industry in China and particularly the rapidly expanding area of 3D computer animation. The Media School was awarded the top "five star" rating for computer animation in the last Research Assessment Exercise in the UK and is home to the National Centre for Computer Animation.

China is setting up New Media business parks, often with special zones for computer animation, in major cities across the country. The Media School will use its know-how to help develop these industries, supplying training courses and working with Chinese research institutes and start-up companies in the sector.

The Media School will also run a series of training courses in the UK aimed at introducing Chinese businesses to the highly developed British computer animation industry. The first such course is likely to be held as early as November.
