2001: A Space Odyessy- the Music
Professor Deutsch discusses the original score

The Launch of the Screen Academy at Bournemouth University took place in the Barnes lecture Theatre on 15th March, where Professor Stephen Deutsch delivered the inaugural lecture.

The lecture was open to staff and students of both Bournemouth University and the Arts Institute, who are partners in the Screen Academy.

Professor Deutsch is an academic as well as professional composer, who has composed over 30 scores for film and television, as well as many works for theatre and dance. He is Professor of Post Production in the University's Media School. In partnership with Bournemouth University, he is also supervising music tutor at the National Film & Television School.

In his talk, after describing ways in which music can give an audience hidden references to the meaning of a film (for example in Stanley Kubrick's, The Shining and Martin Scorsese's, Raging Bull), Prof. Deutsch went on to describe the intricate pattern of musical codes which Kubrick employed in his film, 2001. As a result, the officially commissioned score by Alex North was not used, although it was recorded. North did not realise the omission until he attended the premiere!
