NCTJ Re-accredit Journalism Degree Confirming its unique status |
The top training body for the newspaper industry, the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ), has re-accredited BA (Hons) Multi-Media Journalism for a further three years.
An inspection panel including two newspaper editors said that BA (Hons) Multi-Media Journalism goes "from strength to strength". The panel praised its multi-media ethos and its "excellent combination of the professional and academic" in a "well-balanced curriculum". The programme exceeded NCTJ standards in some areas, it said.
The panel met staff and students, visited the programme's newsrooms and scrutinised programme documents and student work.
NCTJ boss Joanne Butcher said: "The programme has huge strengths in terms of teaching and technology and the use of visiting lecturers and is ahead of the game in terms of embracing multimedia skills." BA (Hons) Multi-Media Journalism could be summed in terms of "motivation, enjoyment and enthusiasm on the part of both students and staff," she added.
Programme Leader Tom Hill said: "The panel's verdict was a great tribute to the professionalism and dedication of the programme team and to the ability and commitment of our students."
Re-accreditation confirms the courses' status as the only journalism courses in the UK with accreditations from all three journalism training bodies, the NCTJ, the Periodicals Training Council and the Broadcast Journalism Training Council. BA (Hons) Multi-Media Journalism was the first undergraduate journalism programme to win NCTJ accreditation, back in 1995, and has also held it longer than any other.
Head of Journalism and Communication David Bradshaw said: "The fact that accreditation has been renewed time after time is a tremendous accolade for BA (Hons) Multi-Media Journalism, which succeeds in combining the professional competences and understandings that editors want, with the academic rigour expected of a degree programme."
