The Media School has a long history of attracting some of the industry's finest guest speakers, but final year students on the BA (Hons) Multi-Media Journalism degree were treated to an unprecedented surprise recently.

Visiting Fellow, Eve Pollard, and her daughter, Claudia Winkleman, became the first parent-sibling duo to speak to journalism undergraduates since the course began over 13 years ago.

Pollard, only the second ever female Editor of a British national newspaper, and Winkleman, a national television presenter, gave students advice on how to secure that all important first job and then go on to make a successful career in journalism. Claudia indicated the presence of a potential third generation of journalists in the family when she revealed that she is carrying a baby due to be born in May.

Pollard is one of Britain's best-known female journalists having edited the Sunday Mirror, Sunday Express, several weekend supplements and Elle magazine in the USA. Her daughter has presented The National Lottery, Liquid News and Strictly Come Dancing's sister show, 'It Takes Two'.

The pair passed on tips about how to succeed on work experience to the best ways to draw original answers out of high profile interviewees.

After a Q&A session with students, Pollard and Winkleman were lavish in their praise for the The Media School's BA (Hons) Multi-Media Journalism degree: "I really am in favour of a course like this," said Pollard. "It provides students with the opportunity to experience each type of media - magazines, newspapers, television and radio - and not just one or two. Those who criticise such courses are out of touch with the reality of what you need to make your way in journalism today."

Pollard, a Visiting Fellow to The Media School since 1995, added: "I like coming down to Bournemouth and passing on my experiences to a whole generation of young people hoping to go into the media. The Media School has a good reputation and is very highly respected within the media industry. Students leaving Bournemouth University are real ambassadors and the name really does get around for all the right reasons."
