Graduate Featured in Guardian Award Winner Rob Silverton tells all |
The Media School students have proved entering work for national and international competitions is well worth the effort.
The British Interactive Media Association have shortlisted work from our students consistently over the last few years and Andrew Devlin broke the mould this year (2006) by winning in a commercial category (Best Application for Handheld Media) instead of the student category. A previous year winner Rob Silverton (2004) had a front page photograph in the saturday Guardian supplement recently, and in the article inside he describes how the competition win led to the successful formation of his company:
"Robert Silverton...., a Bournemouth University graduate, won the British Interactive Media Association prize in 2003 for the final- year project of his new media production degree. Not thinking he had a chance of winning when his project was shortlisted, the 24-year old considered staying away from the awards ceremony. Changing his mind, however, proved a lucky break as he was seated next to executives from Unit9, a new media production company, who he was able to talk to over dinner.
"You don't get an opportunity like that often," says Silverton. "Money can't but that sort of advertising, particularly for students." Through that chance meeting, Unit9 offered Silverton freelance work, which helped when he decided to start his own internet software development company, Unwrong, with his brother in Edinburgh. "We got a really big job through them (Unit9) based on the other stuff I had been doing. It was an incredible success and based on that and subsequent jobs we've been able to build the company on that."
Silverton does not believe he would have been so lucky if he had just sent the company his CV." Saturday Guardian 'Rise' Article Jan 28 2006
