Professor Stephen Deutsch's Music Featured ...in Play For Today at the Barbican |
London's Barbican will screen a 'Play for Today' next week which features music by Professor Stephen Deutsch of The Media School.
Jumping Bean Bag, to be screened on Tuesday, 28th February at 7.30pm, has never been reshown until now and gave Professor Deutsch his first - and only! - opportunity to create rock music.
Jumping Bean Bag tells the story of Slag Bag, a band formed at public school, who play souped-up glam rock (think Roxy Music mixed with Yes and plenty of Spiders From Mars. Slag Bag dream of being "as big as the Bay City Rollers". With singer Ozzie Freemantle (David 'Ford Prefect' Dixon) and drummer Snare (Denis Lawson) and songs like Snake Madness, they debut at an end-of-year school play, are expelled, then rise swiftly to the top only for disaster to strike. Among their loyal fans is a young Linda Robson.
According to Bob Stanley in The Guardian, Jumping Bean Bag is "unrelenting in its mixture of unintentional hilarity and genuinely great songs (written by Prof Deutsch!). Suede may well have based their career around this film."
