A project to investigate creativity in screen-based media

The Media School wins funding for major regional collaboration into creativity.

The Media School has won funding from the prestigious Arts and Humanities Research Council for a collaborative venture to explore the contemporary conditions which motivate or inhibit creativity in interactive television and film.

This is a highly topical project in the current media landscape where digital technologies – especially those that facilitate the convergence of television with the internet - are transforming how culture is created, produced, distributed and consumed. This is leading to new creative forms, including content which straddles more than one media platform - such as television, mobile and the internet. It is also encouraging new occupations and skills to emerge, and inspiring increasingly complex audience relationships.

The funding will support a network of academics from eight universities in the south west together with media production companies who will meet over the course of the next year for intellectual exchanges and the development of multi-disciplinary, collaborative research into the motivation and coordination of creativity in screen-based media.

The project is headed by Dr Christine Daymon, Reader in Communication and Media, and the network also includes Mike Molesworth; both are based in The Media School. The project complements the work of a range of researchers in The Media School including those involved in investigating media management, consumers and gaming, television production, and computer animation.
