BU brings volleyball cup to Bournemouth

Bournemouth Pier BU is proud to be hosting this year’s Volleyball England National Beach Student Cup.

Top student athletes from around the country will square off on Dorset’s blue flag beaches when BU hosts the 2009 Volleyball England National Beach Student Cup from 30-31 May.

BU fought off opposition from other coastal and sporting universities in England for the right to host the event, which was played in Margate, Kent last year.

The 2009 competition features support from Red Bull with teams from over 25 universities and higher education institutions to compete in both male and female groups of two and four including international competitors and members of Team GB.

Gemma Nunnerley of Volleyball England said: “We are very confident BU will do a great job and hope this to be a stepping stone to being part of the VolleyFest and VEBeach Tournaments in the future.”

Sunday will also see the launch of ‘sportBU’. This is BU’s new brand for sport and aims to provide positive experiences through sport, recreation and physical activity through the University’s community, student and public programmes.

“This is a prestigious event and one that will bring some much-deserved attention to sportBU and further development progression to our Volleyball programme,” said Barry Squires, Head of BU’s Sport Development Unit.

The event is taking place between Bournemouth and Boscombe piers.

Admission to the competition is free and matches start from 9.30am on Saturday 30 May. The finals will be held on Sunday 31 May around 4pm and there will be 200 deckchairs available for fans to enjoy the competition.
