Sports Management students from the School of Tourism helped organise a record breaking children’s golf event.
Over 1,100 primary school children from Dorset attended the Big Swing at Canford Park Sports Pitches, smashing the previous record which was 800.
The children were treated to a trick shot master class from World Golf Trick Champion Geoff Swain, who wowed the youngsters with a selection of his finest trick shots.
‘The Green Golfers’ from St Michael’s School in Bournemouth were the winners on the day, who qualified to take part in the School Games Final in July.
Richard Negus, a second year Sports Management (golf) student said: “As a team we were very happy with the day’s proceedings. The event allowed us to apply the relevant theory gained from BU to a real life sporting scenario. The BSc (Hons) Sports Management (Golf) degree equipped us extremely well for the event, having studied units specifically in events management and operations management.
“The use of good creativity and operational planning skills enabled us to develop a truly unique golfing experience for the children. Through good professional networking we were able to secure World Golf Trick Shot Champion Geoff Swain; something that we had never imagined achievable. The development of strong working relationships within the group allowed for a controlled planning process and excellent functionality on the day. We would like to thank all of the volunteers who gave up their time to help at the event as well as The Golf Foundation and of course PGA Professional Darren Stratman.”
