A partnership has been set up between BU and Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm Park to help drive business growth and increase visitor numbers at the tourist attraction.

Academics from the School of Tourism, one of the UK’s leading centres for tourism research and enterprise, will work with the Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm Park on a new shortened Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) initiative to provide and implement specific business developments and strategies to improve the overall performance of the farm.

Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (KTP) is a government-funded UK-wide programme enabling businesses to improve their competitiveness, productivity and performance. A KTP achieves this through the forming of a partnership between an organisation and academic institution.

This is the first time BU has worked with a local organisation on a short term KTP programme, which usually run from 18 to 36 months. A relaxation of the funding rules has allowed BU academics to work with local organisations on a 40-week programme.

Cholderton Rare Breeds Farm Park General Manager Luke McEwan said: “This is a really important project for us. Not only will it help us to access University expertise and resources but will enable us to take a fresh look at what we do, and how we do it, to ensure that we can provide visitor’s with the best possible experience of our animals in the future.”

Steven Richards, lead academic added: “We will be using academic resources to analysis the business opportunities, and then work with the Farm to create a business development strategy that is bespoke to their niche sector. For us this is not just about assisting a business, it is also about safeguarding the future care of these wonderful rare breeds of animals, and helping families access the Farm Park for a wonderful day out.”
