A lecturer in the School of Tourism has been honoured by an international hospitality journal for her recent PhD research into the employment experiences of Polish migrant workers in the sector.
Dr Hania Janta has been chosen, by the Editor of International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management, as a Special Commendation Award winner of the 2010 Emerald/EFMD Outstanding Doctoral Research Award in the Hospitality Management category.
A Lecturer in HR and Employability in the School, Hania's PhD is titled: 'Employment experiences of Polish migrant workers in the UK hospitality sector' and was considered to be of 'exceptionally high quality' by the journal.
Hania's research found that Polish migrants' main motive for entering employment in hospitality is for self development as they often wish to use and learn foreign languages and gain work experience. But these opportunities are viewed as a means to improve career prospects in the UK, with migrants often treating the hospitality sector as a temporary solution to employment, later moving on to other sectors that are in line with their qualifications.
Speaking about her commendation, Hania said: "I'm very happy and honoured to receive this international award."
