Students at Bournemouth University studying Sports Management (Golf) are now benefitting from the skills and expertise of Captain of the Professional Golfers’ Association Eddie Bullock.
Eddie, a former professional golfer and now golf management consultant, will be working with BU undergraduate students to share his knowledge of the industry and introduce them to key individuals in the golfing world.
Eddie has considerable experience in the industry across a range of areas such as strategic management, structured organisational changes, marketing and customer service.
Developing key industry contacts is an invaluable element to the course, often providing students with placements and graduate employment, as well as opportunities for consultancy work and guest speaking. Examples of current placement providers include Celtic Manor, Gleneagles, Sunningdale and the Interlachen Country Club in the USA.
Ian Jones, Programme Leader for the Sports Management (Golf) degree, says: "Through networking with Eddie I have managed to develop a network of key industry contacts who are able to provide placement and employment opportunities. One such example is Jerry Kilby, Chief Executive Officer of the Club Managers Association of Europe (CMAE). The CMAE is a non-profit making professional association with members located throughout Europe and beyond. After meetings both on campus and in London the CMAE agreed to affiliate the Sports Management Golf Undergraduate degree - a first in the industry. They also agreed that all BU golf students could join under a student rate and have access to worldwide contacts, which is so essential in the current climate.
"This is one of the programme’s many recent developments and the students have relished the opportunity to meet and network with engaging individuals. Another exciting project the students are involved in is the South West Golf Roots City Olympic Project. Bournemouth is only one of three cities chosen to be part of the Golf Foundation project, which aims to raise the profile of golf in urban areas to challenge the perceptions of golf."
Through the project BU has secured funding for 20 students from the BSc Sports Management (Golf) programme to train as instructors in Tri-Golf, which is a ‘mini’ version of golf designed specifically for young children and Extreme Golf, which is a new version of the game designed specifically for young teenagers. The students will then deliver training in local schools, contributing to the ongoing drive for an Olympic legacy.
