For many of us, the everyday life of travellers is something we know very little about. ‘Born in the Wheel of a Wagon’ will showcase the life and leisure activities of elderly members of this community, offering a rare insight into their way of life through photographic portraits and oral history.
The exhibition presents this through a variety of different themes including education, work, community, recreation and nostalgia. The oral history material gives a fantastic opportunity to glance into their daily lives, as the elderly members of a travelling community share their stories about their life and leisure on the road.
This material has been gathered by research assistant Avril Silk and Yvette Staelens from Bournemouth University, and the photographs have been taken by Ted Franklin.
The exhibition is part of ‘Grey and Pleasant Land’; a project about interdisciplinary exploration of the connectivity of older people in rural civic society based on the work of 12-month NDA-funded Preparatory Network.
‘Born in the Wheel of a Wagon’ is designed by MA Museum Studies students from the School of Applied Sciences at Bournemouth University.
The exhibition take place from 5 May 2011-18 June 2011 in the Atrium Gallery, Poole House, Bournemouth University. The gallery is open Monday-Saturday, 9am-6pm and the admission is free. There is a pay and display car park (£2 up to 4 hours). There is free parking after 4 pm.
