Teams of first year computing students take part in BU’s annual Computing in Business event every May as part of their end of year assessment. The event runs over a working week, with companies invited on the final day to an exhibition of the competing teams’ projects.

The teams are given a simulated client brief: to design a piece of software providing a solution for their client’s business issue. Over the course of the week the “client” may change the brief, impose new deadlines, or call meetings at a moment’s notice - all scenarios which can happen in a live business environment.

Responding to the challenge, the students have the opportunity to apply the theory they have absorbed from all units of their first year of study into practice. They are mentored through the process by the teaching team. Compliance officers from industry and the professions visit during the week to advise and observe.

Members of Team Disegno had this to say about Computing in Business week:

  • Lewis Davies - “One of the hardest, but most rewarding weeks I’ve ever had.”
  • Will McGregor - “A great week that once experienced will set you up nicely for your exams.”
  • Alexander Wheeler - “One of the best things I have ever done.”
