BU students celebrate at New Designers

14 July 2010

BU stand at New Designers show

Bournemouth University’s (BU) student designers were part of the London design scene at the biggest graduate design showcase in Europe.

Ten final year undergraduate students from BU’s School of Design, Engineering & Computing presented their ideas at the New Designers show and have won runner-up prize for Best Design Stand.

New Designers is a high-profile event which supports fresh thinking and aspiration, showcasing the work, energy and talent of over 3500 designers from across the UK. The event took place at one of London’s most dynamic and vibrant buildings – The Business Design Centre.

The event comes hot on the heels of BU’s Festival of Design & Innovation, where students from Product Design, Industrial Design, Design Engineering, Fashion & Textiles, Interior Design, Computer Aided Product Design and Sustainable Graphics & Packaging displayed over 170 designs & prototypes.

The New Designers judges voted BU’s design stand one of the best at the Show. Dr Xavier Relay, Deputy Dean (Education) said: “I was very proud to learn that BU had won the runner-up in the Best Design Stand category, out of over 100 exhibitors. Our Design students, with the support of our dedicated staff, produced an exciting and innovating display space where visitors could interact with original working prototypes.”

Students also recognised the benefits of being part of Europe’s biggest design showcase. “New Designers is a great way for us to showcase our work to a multitude of industry professionals and could provide a stepping stone to our first design jobs. It’s also exciting to see the work produced by other design courses from around the country,” said 23 year old Gary Stephenson, from Enfield, North London who attended the show with his camping storage product.

New Designers and our participating graduates benefit greatly from the fantastic support that is received for the event from across the industry.  Companies including Virgin Atlantic, Tigerprint, Hallmark, Sky and Bombay Sapphire offer help in many ways from providing funding and awards to work placements and commercial advice.

Watch this space for the next best kept secret in the world of design.
