BU launches 22 new short courses to provide professional development for product designers and engineers.

The courses, which start between May and August, range from computer-aided design, tribology, dynamic design verification, and structural integrity in design, to understanding and designing against corrosion, using simulation for competitive advantage, and advance mechanics of materials and interacting systems.

The courses, some of which run for up to five days, are taught by leading industry experts including Dr Zulfiqar Khan, the industrial advisor to the Institution of Mechanical Engineers' professional review committee, and Professor Siamak Noroozi, Director of Bournemouth University's Design Simulation Research Centre.

One of the most innovative new courses is 'The Myth of Sustainability', which focuses on the facts and fiction of sustainability, the market economy and lifecycle analysis, looking at the merits of recycling, biodegrading and converting. This one-day course on 9 July is expected to be particularly popular among small and medium-sized enterprises, new designers, and anyone interested in diversification.

Norman Stock, Business Relationships Officer in BU's School of Design, Engineering and Computing, said the courses were being launched following analysis of the ever-changing needs of industry professionals.

"The short courses will appeal to designers, engineers, managers, consultants and others involved in areas such as design, production, testing, quality assurance and research and development," Mr Stock said. "The courses have been costed below the market level, and allied to the University's excellent reputation in this field, we expect interest to be very high indeed. This really is an ideal opportunity for businesses to provide cost-effective investment in the professional development of their staff."
