2008 Preview: BU looks ahead to an exciting year

More Undergraduate Open Days

You’ll now have more chances to come and visit us. After the huge demand of last year we’ve increased the number of Undergraduate Open Days we’re running to five, so don’t hesitate to register online in advance.

Our new Subject Insight Days will give you an even closer look at specific courses and areas of study through the eyes of our staff and current students.

Facilities and resources

We’re improving our appearance. Students at our Talbot Campus will benefit from a new first floor student lounge, a social space to meet and take time out from studies.

Further alterations and refurbishments across both of our campuses are also planned, including a new reception area with café in Studland House on the Lansdowne Campus. The new ‘face’ of this building will also be revealed in the Spring following a major re-cladding project.

Flagship festival

The Festival of Design & Innovation gets underway on 26 June with the promise of being bigger and better than ever! This flagship event for BU will showcase the entrepreneurial ideas of our final-year students across a range of Design courses.

Many have successfully turned their student projects into commercial successes, including:

  • ‘The Quick Pitch’ a pop-up tent designed by graduate Franziska Conrad, is now manufactured under exclusive license by – one of the UK’s favourite camping brands
  • The BioLogic Zorin Pump was sold by graduate Phil Robinson to Dahon California Incorporated, the world’s largest producer of folding bicycles, for global manufacture and distribution.

Academic Experts and Centre of Excellence

During 2008 we’ll be defining our Centres of Excellence in research, teaching, professional practice and enterprise across all of our Academic Schools.

These include established Centres which made a name for themselves in 2007 and look prepared to make further headlines in 2008.

Forensic Science

Our renowned Centre for Forensic Science is already preparing for the return of its summer series of simulation workshops in July 2008, with activities involving an air crash site, a temporary mortuary and mass graves excavation.

Our staff and students in the Centre are already world leaders in their field. You may have heard or read about them in the national media during 2007, as they are now regularly asked to comment on issues ranging from genocide to crime-scene evidence.

Archaeology, Anthropology and Heritage

Our Archaeologists will be involved in an exciting project during the coming year: the x-ray and scanning of an Egyptian Mummy (in co-operation with City University, London) and fieldwork excavation at The Pyramids in Egypt.

Sport and Event Research

The 2012 Olympics might be four years away but our position as the only university in Dorset is providing us with a range of opportunities. Dorset is the only place outside of Greater London to host 2012 events, with the sailing takes place at The National Sailing Academy at Weymouth and Portland in West Dorset.

Our subject experts are already contributing to a whole host of themes and issues associated with the 2012 Games, including sport, health, tourism and economics.

In January 2008 the Centre will host a seminar called ‘Leveraging Social, Cultural and Health Benefits from London 2012’, with key Olympic speakers and influencers from across the region.

Sharing our Research

Several pieces of groundbreaking research are being disseminated early in 2008, including:

Emotions and Journalism Conference, London, January 2008

In partnership with the Dart Centre, the global network for journalism and trauma, we’ll present findings of joint research, focusing on groundbreaking investigations into the training for journalists and filmmakers in the UK.

‘Imagine this: Living with Dementia’, Poole, March 2008

As part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science we’ll be presenting our findings to the general public into how our research can benefit approaches to care for those living with dementia sufferers.

Research Assessment Exercise

In December we’ll be receiving the results of our submission for the Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) a process which our staff dedicated much time and effort to during 2007.
