Students win bronze at BBC Gardeners’ World

14 July 2009

The Sea Breeze Garden, designed by BU students A garden designed by BU students has won a top medal from the Royal Horticultural Society.

Final year BU Landscape Design students have been awarded the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) bronze medal at this year’s BBC Gardeners’ World Live event.

The students, who studied at BU partner institution Bridgwater College, completed three weeks of landscaping to construct their show garden ‘Sea Breeze’ at the live exhibition at Birmingham’s NEC.

Inspired by the Somerset coast, the garden featured salt tolerant planting and a place to sit and enjoy a drink whilst watching the sun set.

It was one of around 20 gardens at the show, which took place from 10-14 June 2009.

Programme Manager for Landscape Design Iain Truman said: “We are very happy with our Bronze Medal, something that does not come easily from the RHS.”

BU’s School of Services Management oversees the course at Bridgwater College’s Cannington Centre for Land Based Studies.

Services Management Link Tutor Keith Hayman commented: “This is another example of high quality output pitched at national level demonstrating excellence in guided learning.

“Iain Truman is an outstanding example of an academic who can deliver both theoretical and practical applications to a high level in his specialist area.”
