BU achieves top UK performance in journalism

8 December 2009

Karen Fowler-Watt (left) with Kim Fletcher, NCTJ Chairman BU’s renowned journalism degree has been named the best course of its kind in the UK by the top training body for the profession.

The BA (Hons) in Multi-Media Journalism, delivered by BU’s Media School, has received the Accredited Course Performance Award from the National Council for the Training of Journalists (NCTJ).

The award recognises the excellent achievements of BU students who completed their studies at the end of the 2008-09 academic year. Their results show that BU students outperformed the undergraduate courses of all other accredited institutions in Public Affairs; Media Law; Shorthand; News and Features Journalism; and Radio, TV and Online Journalism.

“This is a tremendous accolade for our journalism graduates and staff who have clearly placed Bournemouth University’s Media School at the forefront of journalism education in the UK,” said Karen Fowler-Watt, Associate Dean for Journalism and Communication.

“Our graduates have distinguished themselves as high fliers, with many students achieving the gold standard of A grades across the board, and the future prospects for our BA (Hons) in Multi-Media Journalism look very bright indeed.”

The BA (Hons) in Multi-Media Journalism at BU became the first undergraduate journalism course to win NCTJ accreditation in 1995, retaining that status longer than any other in the country.

A leader in the field of developing the personal and professional skills of its students, the course remains the only one of its kind to be accredited by all three journalism training bodies – the NCTJ, the Periodicals Training Council (PTC) and the Broadcast Journalism Training Council (BJTC).
