BU Grabs Plate After Extra Time Win

29 March 2007

BU Men's Student Football team celebrates Ian McIntosh, Richard Bentley and Chris Kennedy scored the extra time goals to give Bournemouth University the 2007 BUSA Men’s Football Knockout Plate.

BU 3 Sunderland 0

After a fairly even 90 minutes in hot and sunny conditions – when both sides each hit the bar once in a game of few clear-cut chances – the final whistle heralded another half an hour to try to find a winner.

The breakthrough came deep into the first period of extra time when McIntosh forced the ball past the Sunderland University goalkeeper from close range after a right wing cross.

Sunderland again threatened to get back into the game as the second period of extra time saw them attacking down the hill at the Bournemouth Sports Club pitch, but the BU team held firm.

And then a decent-sized crowd were jubilant after a mix-up in the Sunderland defence planted the ball at the feet of Bentley and he smashed an unstoppable shot in off the post to make the game safe.

As Sunderland poured forward trying to get something out of the game Kennedy sprinted clear in the dying seconds only to be unceremoniously hacked to the ground as he was about to shoot.

With the defender fortunate to stay on the pitch after that challenge, Kennedy dusted himself down and stroked home the resultant penalty with the last kick of the game.

The BU men’s first team won this season’s BUSA Western 3A Conference with eight wins and a draw in nine matches with a positive goal difference of 34.

The squad’s 28 table-topping points easily gave them the conference title as nearest rivals Gloucestershire 2nds finished a distant second on 16.
