BU Golfer Wins National Tournament

25 July 2007

Runner-up Ross Dixon, Vice-Chancellor of the University of St Andrews, Dr Brian Lang, and tournament winner Chris O'Hagan BU golfer Chris O’Hagan has won the coveted Boyd Quaich for 2007.

Chris, who’s studying for a degree in Sports Management (Golf) at BU, came first in the memorial event, played on the New and Old Courses at St. Andrews, Scotland.

The 20-year-old’s four-round total of 292 tied him with University of St Andrews first team captain Ross Dixon for the overall lead. Dixon had a chance to win the Quaich outright but missed a 15-foot putt on the final hole.

O’Hagan won the title by shooting a 71 to finish the tournament, just one shot better than Dixon’s final round.

Originally from South Birmingham, O’Hagan completed his A-Levels at the Alcester Grammar School in Alcester, Warwickshire. He is currently two months into a placement at the Remedy Oak Golf Club in Dorset.

His fellow Bournemouth competitor Kevin Garwood tied for eighth overall in the competition which has been played since 1947 in memory of two St Andrews students who lost their lives in the Second World War.

The Quaich itself (pronounced ‘quake’) is a Scottish drinking vessel which serves as the trophy for the competition winner.
