Donkey Work Brings Double the Rewards

Chris Pethick's double award-winning photo "Donk" Chris Pethick, 22, has won two major international prizes with his photo entitled ‘Donk’.

Chris is a final year student working towards his BA (Hons) in Photography at Salisbury College – a course offered in partnership with BU.

He has not only won the Panasonic Batteries Amateur Photographer of the Year competition, but also the Grand Prize from the Photo Imaging Education Association (PIEA) International Student-Teacher Photo Competition in the USA.

Chris, originally from Mary Tavy in Devon, will jet off to New York for a week’s stay in July at the Waldorf Astoria as part of his Panasonic prize.

Meanwhile, ‘Donk’ will join an exhibition of over 100 other winning PIEA competition images in Las Vegas in March before going on tour as part of a travelling exhibition to schools, colleges and museums around the world over the next three years.

Chris says that he draws his inspiration from a range of other artists including Salvador Dali, Michael Jackson and Jack Daniels, one of the visiting lecturers at Salisbury College, who particularly inspired him to make dynamic animal photography.

“I chose photography because I used to be well into painting oil and acrylic on canvas,” he continues.

“Although painting is quite similar to photography, I later realised that I could get more satisfaction from photography because of the immediacy of the medium; I hope to go into commercial advertising photography when I finish my degree.”
