BU Media Head to Review BBC Business Coverage

Stephen Jukes, Head of The Media School at Bournemouth University Stephen Jukes, Head of The Media School at Bournemouth University, has been appointed to a national panel that will assess the impartiality of BBC coverage of business news.

The six-strong group will be chaired by Sir Alan Budd, former member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, and will assess whether the BBC portrays a fair and balanced picture of the world of business and its impact on society.

The panel will report to the BBC Trust - the body which will replace the corporation’s board of governors - in spring with recommendations for possible changes to programming to follow.

Jukes arrived at BU in February 2005 following extensive journalistic experience leading coverage of foreign affairs and business stories for Reuters.

He said: "I am delighted to be part of this panel examining the BBC's business output.

“In an age of spin and hype, impartiality is one of the cornerstones of trustworthy journalism.”

BBC staff, licence fee payers, unions and other interested parties will be invited to give their views to Sir Alan's panel.

Jukes joins a panel which includes Chris Bones of Henley Management College; John Naughton, Open University professor and Observer columnist; Oxfam director Barbara Stocking; and Paralympic athlete Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson.
