BU Sport Soars to New Heights

16 February 2007

Tennis player BU’s student sporting teams are having a bumper year in the British Universities Sports Association’s (BUSA) Autumn leagues.

Of the 19 men’s and women’s teams competing across 10 BUSA sports, five have topped their respective conferences including the first teams in women’s basketball, men’s football, women’s hockey and women’s tennis, as well as the third team in men’s golf.

Each of these teams now heads for post-season competition joined by the first teams in men’s golf, volleyball, squash and tennis who have also qualified for their respective knockout brackets.

The men’s football team had a particularly productive season, finishing undefeated with a positive goal difference of 34, beating teams from the Universities of Gloucestershire, Southampton, Southampton Solent, Winchester and Bath Spa.

They now have a draw in the first round of the BUSA Football Men’s Plate and will face the winner of a match between Reading and Exeter in the last 16.

The women’s hockey squad lost just once en route to their place in the BUSA Hockey Women’s Plate and also receive a first round bye.

The women’s tennis team lost just three out of 50 singles and doubles matches to storm into the BUSA Tennis Women’s Shield.

All of the results from team and individual competitions go towards BU’s overall BUSA Championship, which last year saw Bournemouth climb to its highest ranking ever at 36th out of 146 institutions competing.
