Students set for trip to Kenya

20 August 2007

Sports students Staff and students from our BU Sport & Recreation are off to Kenya to help improve sporting skills and facilities for children.

BU’s Sports Development Manager Barry Squires and 12 of our students will work in conjunction with Camps International to coach and teach local school children, while building and improving sports facilities.

They’ll also donate sports equipment supplied by Surridge Sports, and providing lessons on how to use it, while visiting the National Safari Park and Kenya's coast to carry out conservation work.

"This is a truly unique opportunity for students to experience grass roots sports development in a country from the developing work," said Barry.

"This trip will also help to develop strong links between Kenya and BU, and is all about sharing and enhancing the lives of others less fortunate."

Sports Psychology student Lela will be one of the students making the trip. She said: "I am really excited and a bit apprehensive. I went to Sri Lanka to help after the tsunami, but this is the first time I’ve done coaching sports abroad.''

The month-long project will culminate with an inter-schools sports festival, where coached and trained teams will compete against each other.
