Coaching kicks off on BU Kenya expedition

30 August 2007

Team leader Barry Squires and local school child Students from BU have begun their adventure of coaching sports to school children and teachers in Kenya.

A group of BU students have begun their month-long adventure of coaching sports to school children and teachers in Kenya.

The group of 12 are participating in the Camp Kenya SDX (Sports Development Expedition), in association with Camps International. All have settled well into their new surroundings and are working with three schools in the Mombasa region - Makongeni, Muhaka and Kinondo.

As well as teaching and training sporting skills, the group is helping to construct football and netball pitches, working in searing heat, and daily torrential rain showers.

From Kenya, team leader Barry Squires says: “So far everyone has really applied themselves very well to the tasks put in front of them and their reactions and discussions each evening, it is already having a positive impact on them to be working in an environment like this.

“The students have already noticed a distinct level of discipline among the children, and an impressive level of enthusiasm and natural sporting ability considering their lack of facilities and equipment.”

The project will culminate with an inter-schools festival, and it has just been confirmed that a Kenyan national football player will be present at the event.
