Bournemouth University students can now study to a brand new ‘beat' after the University's graduates and friends donated funds for the purchase of a new electronic drum set.

The gift of £350 came from the Bournemouth University Alumni Fund towards the purchase of a state-of-the-art Yamaha kit which is now installed in the Music Centre on the Talbot Campus to enable student and staff drummers to rehearse and receive tuition from teacher Perry Clayton.

“This is a brilliant bit of kit which, amongst other things, enables our drummers to play along using headphones without disturbing anybody else!” says Aidan Fairlie, Co-ordinator for Music. “We would like to express our gratitude to those graduates and friends of the University who have made it possible for us to benefit from their generosity.”

The Bournemouth University Music Department provides practice and teaching rooms as well as individual tuition across a wide range of instruments from piano and drums to singing, violin and saxophone. Students and staff also participate in a number of musical groups and ensembles including an orchestra, big band, percussion ensemble, full choir, students' choir and a gospel choir. These groups will combine and be joined by pupils from the Bishop of Winchester School as well as the Stagewise School of Performing Arts on Saturday, March 11th , to present the University's largest ever musical event with the performance of Carl Orff's Carmina Burana .

“Music is very much at the heart of Bournemouth University and we are working to break down barriers between types of music for the benefit of our participants and our various audiences,” says Aidan Fairlie. “The bonus is that we're having a lot of fun in doing what we do and open an invitation for the community to not only get behind us but join us! We are pleased to welcome members of the local community to all our musical activities either as active participants or as listeners and we would love to see you at the Campus on March 11.”
