Polar Explorer at BU

Date: 16 December 2011

On 21 November Anthony Jinman, Polar Explorer gave a talk to students from the school of Applied Sciences about how expeditions and projects provide transferable skills for the business world.

The lecture was part of BU’s ‘Professional You’ campaign. He spent 51 days ‘extreme camping’ in Polar regions collecting water samples and exploring in conditions of up to minus 50 degrees.

Jinman talked about how the key skills of: team work, problem solving, communication skills and working on your own initiative can be learnt and utilised during an expedition exploring the world we live in are the same key skills required to get a job after university, but would provide much more interesting story to tell at interview.

He explained how he achieved his dream of exploring the Polar regions at the age of 29 and emphasised the importance of having a dream and setting out to achieve it. Jinman described the skills required along the way such as raising the money and organising the expedition.

Anthony Jinman said: “I always dreamt of what it would be like to go to another planet. But I think that this is as close as you can get and it isn’t another planet, its our planet, and its a pretty cool place to go off and explore and learn about”.
