Ecologist wins BU poster prize

School of Applied Sciences PhD student wins poster prize at BU postgraduate conference.

PhD student Sui Chian Phang has been awarded the best poster prize at Bournemouth University's (BU) Third Annual Postgraduate Researcher Conference.

The event at BU earlier this month was held to showcase postgraduate projects and gives researchers the opportunity to present their work in a multi-disciplinary environment.

Sui, who was awarded £25 book vouchers, describes his PhD: "I'm looking into the parameterisation and validation of an individual-based model for salmonids (trout and salmon) that predicts their response to changes in the environment."

He continued: "The model works by focussing on the behavioural decisions of individual fish in response to internal and external parameters. Examples of internal factors are body condition and size and examples of external factors would be food availability, number of competitors and water velocity."

The winning poster demonstrated the theoretical concepts behind individual-based models and outlined the management regime that the model will investigate.

Sui will now focus on completing his PhD and getting his research published, which he hopes will help inform and design management regimes in rivers that support fisheries.
