BU cross-cultural study

A study into the friendship patterns of international students, by the School of Services Management’s Dr Lorraine Brown, features prominently in this week’s Times Higher Education.

Originally published in the International Journal of Educational Research, the study highlights the formation of social “ghettos” among international students at a University in southern England.

For the paper, titled “An ethnographic study of the friendship patterns of international students in England: An attempt to recreate home through conational interaction”, Dr Brown conducted a study of 150 foreign postgraduates, including interviews with 15 students from 15 different nationalities.

Results showed that the students felt the need to mix with people of the same nationality due to reasons such as comfort of shared language and heritage, instrumental support and the fear of discrimination.
